The Best Ways to Beat the Cold and Flu Season

With winter comes illness. The cold weather can have a severe effect on both our bodies and our immune system. The shorter days can cause irritability and depression. The holidays can bring us into contact with a lot of people, increasing our chances of falling sick. However, there are many ways to help prevent colds during the flu season that are cheap, easy, and usually available in the house already.

Keep Warm with Warm Liquid

Some days, all you need to sort yourself out is a nice cup of tea. If you feel like you’re coming down with a cold, make sure to drink lots of hot, herbal tea. Not only is the hydration great for your body, but the heat of the tea helps to relieve nasal congestion and soothe your throat. Many different herbal teas will help with different cold symptoms. Licorice root, for example, is excellent for a sore throat, whereas echinacea is wonderful for a boost to the immune system. Make sure to drink herbal tea for the best benefits and avoid milk! This can create more mucus, which will worsen your cold. If you don’t have any tea on hand, even hot water with lemon and honey can do wonders for your body.

Wear a Mask in Public Spaces

Masks can be effective when worn correctly. The easiest way to catch a cold is from another person, and this can be tricky to navigate when out in very public areas. During the cold months, it’s best to shop around and buy bulk branded face masks so you don’t need to run out constantly to stock up, and you know you’ll be wearing high-quality masks. Be sure if you wear a mask that you throw it away after each use. A dirty mask can lead to other illnesses.

Keep Active, Even Indoors

The winter months make us want to hibernate away for months at a time but be sure to continue regular exercise. If you must stay indoors due to weather or other conditions, activities like yoga, Pilates, or aerobics can be easily done inside. Physical exercise helps keep your immune system strong and healthy. By doing regular exercise 3-4 times a week, you can greatly reduce your chances of coming down with any sort of cold or virus.

Catching a cold is no one’s idea of a great time, but it can be easily preventable with just a few simple steps. Stock up on your herbal remedies, buy some face masks for large gatherings, and push yourself to exercise when possible.
